Computer Network Services Tip – Disconnect On Vacation But Do It Safely
Computer Network Services Tip | How to Work Safely on Vacation
By Rick Boyles, President, Computer Networks, Inc.
It’s that time of year again when business owners and teams across Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and Suffolk start packing up for summer trips or a much-needed break. Ideally, we’d all disconnect completely from work, but in reality, most of us still check email, respond to messages, or log in remotely while away.
Before you take your laptop or phone to the beach or your favorite getaway, make sure you’re doing it safely. Logging in from the wrong network or leaving unsecured settings on can put your company’s data at risk.
1. Avoid Public Wi-Fi at All Costs
Never connect to “any available network” while traveling. Public Wi-Fi networks in hotels, airports, or cafés are breeding grounds for cyber threats. If you must access your company email, business applications, or sensitive cloud files, only do so on a trusted, secure connection.
For frequent travelers, invest in a personal MiFi device that acts as a private mobile hotspot. It’s one of the safest and simplest ways to protect your connection when you’re working remotely.
2. Turn Off Automatic Network Connections
Many laptops and mobile devices are set to automatically connect to open Wi-Fi networks. Disable this feature before you leave. By requiring manual approval for each connection, you prevent your device from linking to potentially malicious networks without your knowledge.
3. Disable File and Printer Sharing
Before traveling, turn off all printer and file-sharing options on your mobile devices. This small step blocks one of the most common backdoors hackers use to gain access to company networks.
4. Keep Security Software Updated
Whether you’re connecting from a hotel, a friend’s house, or your own mobile hotspot, make sure your antivirus and firewall software are current. Outdated security tools are far less effective at identifying new threats.
5. Encourage Your Team to Take a True Break
While it’s important to stay connected in emergencies, employees should feel empowered to fully unplug when possible. However, if your staff does need to check in, require them to follow these safe remote-access practices to protect both company and client information.
Stay Protected Wherever You Go
Working remotely can be convenient—but it also opens the door to cybersecurity risks if not handled properly. By following these computer network safety tips, you’ll keep your data secure and avoid costly breaches while still enjoying your time off.
